Joseph Roty

Region:

Domaine Joseph Roty has long been considered one of the top producers in all of Burgundy. The Grand Cru, Premier Cru and village level wines from Gevrey are always intensely concentrated, wonderfully complex and very long-lived. Joseph’s son Pierre-Jean now manages daily operations at the domaine and it is clear that the tradition of excellence has continued.

The flagship Grand Crus Charmes-Chambertin Tres Vieilles Vignes, Mazy-Chambertin and Griottes-Chambertin are all made from very old vines (some having been planted in the late 1800s) and continue to be as rich, concentrated and age-worthy as those produced by his late brother Philippe or their father Joseph.

As renowned as they are for their Grand Crus, the uncommon depth of the Roty village-level Gevrey lieux-dits – Clos Prieur, Brunelle and Champs Chenys – has always made them standouts among their peers. Continuing the trend started by Philippe, Pierre-Jean is making these wines increasingly approachable in their youth. Indeed, under Pierre-Jean, they are absolutely delicious upon release.

Not only have they maintained the high quality of their wines from the Chambertin area, but they have led the charge to boost Marsannay’s reputation as well. Philippe expanded the domaine’s holdings in the village dramatically and joined with other top growers in petitioning the INAO to grant Premier Cru status to the best vineyards. Blind tastings have clearly demonstrated that Roty’s top Marsannays deserve that recognition.
